STARS CAN’T HANG ON TO LATE LEAD, FALL TO WATERLOO IN SHOOTOUT

PECHAR SCORES TWICE, MANGAN ADDS FOURTH OF SEASON

Jared Mangan scored the go-ahead goal with 2:22 remaining regulation but the Lincoln Stars fell to the Waterloo Black Hawks, 4-3, in a shootout on Friday night at Young Arena.

Jack Pechar scored twice for his first career USHL multi-goal game. His two power-play goals marked the second consecutive game that the Stars had a multi-goal scorer after Blake Montgomery tallied twice last Saturday. Pechar's two goals were part of a two-for-three effort on the man advantage.

"I think we did a good job of recovering pucks, moving them quickly, understanding what our options were and then executing," head coach Rocky Russo said. "Obviously we had a very abbreviated power play there on the first one. We did a good job of getting the puck over to Mangs on the downhill right to the seam. (Justin) Varner did a good job on the flash screen and a good finish by Jack."

Mangan gave Lincoln (3-3-0-1) its first lead of the night late in the third period after the Stars had twice recovered to tie the game on Pechar goals. Mangan jumped in on the forecheck and wrapped the loose puck around the far post for his team-leading fourth goal of the season.

That lead lasted less than two minutes as Waterloo (4-4-0-0) emptied its net for the extra attacker and Griffin Erdman redirected a shot from Nicholas Fascia with 33 seconds to go in the game. Pechar scored in the second round of the shootout for the Stars' lone tally in it. Teddy Townsend scored as the last shooter of the third round to keep the game alive and then Gavin Lindberg delivered the shootout winner in the fifth round.

Jakub Altrichter cashed in on a four-on-four sequence at the 7:46 mark of the first period to open the scoring and strike for a third consecutive game. Pechar evened it up with a wrist shot from atop the right circle with a second to go on a power play 10:40 into the second period. Fascia gave Waterloo the lead 5:05 later but Pechar again evened the game up by writing home the rebound of his first shot that was blocked right back to him at the 13:04 mark of the third.

Mangan assisted on both of Pechar's goals for his first three-point game of the season. Kai Janviriya recorded the secondary assist on both Pechar tallies for his first multi-point game of the season.

The Stars will face the Black Hawks again at Young Arena next Friday but will first face the Sioux City Musketeers tomorrow night in the second game of this stretch of five consecutive road games. The puck drops at 6:05 at the Tyson Events Center.
