Tanner Ludtke scored two goals and the Lincoln Stars defeated the Tri-City Storm, 6-3, on Saturday night at the Viareo Center.
The Stars won by the same score against the same opponent for the second consecutive night, this time on the road. Ludtke tallied both goals in the first period and Lincoln scored three times in a 1:34 span during the second period.
Lincoln came out strong but surrendered the game's first goal for the first time in the last three games when Tanner Adams redirected a shot from Kaden Muir to put Tri-City up 1-0 at 4:33 of the first.
The Stars responded with a pair of goals from Ludtke. First, he backhanded the rebound from a shot by
Doug Grimes from along the board between netminder Karlis Mezsargs' pads and into the net.
Later in the frame Grimes flipped a puck ahead from the middle of his own zone to the opposing blue line and
Mason Marcellus bodied Sebastian Tornqvist away from the puck to get a one-handed shot off. Mezsargs made the stop but the rebound popped in front of the net and Grimes got a shot off in the slot that Mezsargs again denied. As players from both sides converged and clogged up Mezsargs sightline in the slot, Ludtke grabbed the loose puck on the left-wing side and flicked a shot past Mezsargs for his second multi-goal game of the season and the third consecutive game in which a Stars' skater scored a pair of goals.
"That was good for us to give up the first goal and have to find a way to battle back,"
head coach Rocky Russo said. "It's frustrating because we had all these chances and we're outshooting them 9-2 or 10-2 and (the score is) 1-0 them. We were able to deal with that and that's something you have to do as a team. I thought we responded in a big way."
Ludtke's two goals put the Stars up 2-1 entering the third and they would add on in the later stages of the frame to put the game out of reach for the Storm. Grimes slammed home a rebound on the power play after a shot from
Boston Buckberger at the point at the 14:20 mark of the frame.
Less than a minute later
Patrick Raftery fed
Keaton Peters in front of the net and Peters made the transfer from his backhand to his forehand to score his fourth goal of the season at the 15:13 mark of the second.
Jared Mangan capped the chaotic sequence by scoring for the second time in as many days against Tri-City. He settled a bouncing puck from
Hagen Moe behind the red line and skated it into the attacking end on the left wing. Mangan led a three-on-one rush but kept the puck as the defense backed off him and scored his second goal of the season with a wrister.
"Definitely felt good," Mangan said. "I wasn't playing my best game and it kind of turned the tables for me, switched the game around from my perspective. Moe chipped it out with a good, high chip, the defense slid over and it just opened up for me on the three-on-one."
Tri-City scored a pair of goals in the third period but never got closer than three goals back after Mangan's goal. Graham Ganache redirected a shot at 6:01 of the third and Philippe Blais-Savoie scored at 11:35 of the frame. Shortly before his goal
Antonio Fernandez scored for the first time this season on a wrist shot from atop the right-wing face-off circle. Fernandez's power-play goal meant a little extra in his second game back since returning from injury.
"It was awesome," Fernandez said. "On the power play we have great players like (Marcellus, Grimes, Ludtke and Buckberger) and it helps me out. It was a great screen from Dougie and I was able to find the back of the net."
The three goals in a 1:34 in the second period represented the third time in the last three games that the Stars scored at least three goals in five minutes or less. A week ago against Omaha they struck four times in five minutes and then three times in 2:55 on Friday night against Tri-City.
Cameron Whitehead earned his fourth win in five starts by stopping 24-of-27 shots. He was tested the most in the first period with 13 shots and closed the frame up with 11 consecutive saves.
The Stars look to stretch their winning streak to four games when they return to action next Saturday, Oct. 22, against the Des Moines Buccaneers. Puckdrop at the Ice Box is at 6:05 p.m. for Princess and Girl's Night. Fans can purchase a Princess package with four tickets and two tiaras for $65 at
