Henry Nelson scored the game-winning goal in his second game of the season to help the Lincoln Stars defeat the Fargo Force, 2-1, on Saturday night at the Ice Box.
Nelson tallied the second of two power-play goals and Lincoln (13-7) dealt Fargo (13-4-0-3) their first regulation loss in their last 10 games. It was his second game back after missing the first 18 games of the season and his sixth career goal with the Stars. He tied for the team lead in shots with three on Friday and again tied for the team lead with six on Saturday.
"It felt really good," Nelson said.
"When you're out that long you want to get back in the game somehow. I think yesterday I started a little slow getting the game legs back but I felt really good today and I was happy to pop that one in for the boys."
Seventeen seconds into a power play Nelson found the back of the net when the rebound after a one-timer from
Antonio Fernandez trickled to Nelson backdoor on the near-post side and he whacked it into the empty net.
Nelson's goal was proceeded by a power-play goal from
Klavs Veinbergs to open the scoring at 6:19 of the first.
Cole Crusberg-Roseen set him up with a cross-ice feed and Veinbergs one-timed the puck into an empty net.
Lucas Massie stopped 34-of-35 shots to improve to 4-0 on home ice and 5-0 overall. His 34 saves marked a new season-high, surpassing his previous total of 28 on Oct. 22 against Des Moines.
Lincoln picked up its seventh home victory in nine appearances and bounced back from a 4-1 loss on Friday night to Fargo. The top-ranked penalty-kill unit came through again for the Stars as they went a perfect 4-for-4.
"We made adjustments systematically that the guys picked up on without practice," head coach
Rocky Russo said. "Our penalty kill was unbelievable. You win the special teams battle, you win a playoff-style hockey game and that's what tonight was."
The Stars will go for their first win of the season against the Sioux Falls when they visit the Stampede at 7:05 p.m. on Friday. Lincoln's next home game is next Saturday, Dec. 10 at 6:05 p.m. against the Tri-City Storm. Tickets can be purchased at
