Klavs Veinbergs scored a goal and two assists as the Lincoln Stars defeated the Sioux City Musketeers, 5-3, on Saturday night at the Ice Box.
Lincoln (22-13-1) trailed 4-3 after Ryan Conmy gave Sioux City (18-4-2-3) the lead at the 9:26 mark of the second period. That put the Stars behind for the sixth time in the last six periods but they would come back for the sixth time by scoring three goals in a 5:39 span.
Veinbergs evened it up on a low one-timer off a feed from Brennan Ali from the near boards at the 11:36 mark of the third. Doug Grimes gave the Stars the lead for good 2:10 later after camping in front of the net and cashing in on a backhand pass from Mason Marcellus behind the goal.
That go-ahead goal chased Musketeers starting goaltender Croix Kochendorfer from the goal and then Ali gave the Stars insurance with a wrist shot past Axel Mango for Ali's second goal of the year against Sioux City and his eighth overall.
Ali skated with Veinbergs and Jack Larrigan and all three players recorded multi-point nights. Veinbergs led all Stars skaters with three points while Ali had a goal and an assist and Larrigan recorded a pair of assists.
"The scoring was spread out with a lot of guys involved," head coach Rocky Russo said. "Klavs really needed one, Brennan really needed one. That line played great tonight. They deserved to get rewarded for their efforts."
The Stars got two goals in the first period from defenseman. First it was Antonio Fernandez capitalizing on the power play on a one-timer off a cross-ice feed from Boston Buckberger 6:20 into the game. That goal came shortly after he made a great effort to keep a puck from heading into the neutral zone on a clearing attempt.
The Musketeers followed that up with two goals in 5:09 to take the lead on two shots to the top-right corner, first via a David Poitras power-play tally and then a wrist shot from just inside the blue line off Cole Longacre's stick. Cole Crusberg-Roseen cashed in just 52 seconds later to tie it up on a wrist shot just above the faceoff circles after the Stars nearly scored moments before it. That made it 2-2 after the first before the two teams also combined to score four times in the second.
Crusberg-Roseen's goal was his fourth of the season and second against Sioux City. He recorded a goal and assist in his second game back from injury after missing both games last weekend.
"I saw the net and just had to shoot it," Crusberg-Roseen said. "It was a good pass from Jack Larrigan so I've got to credit him."
Lincoln wraps up the busy weekend on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. at the Tyson Events Center. The Stars are four points ahead of Sioux City for third place in the Western Conference.
