LINCOLN ERASES TWO-GOAL DEFICIT TO BEAT OMAHA

POSTGAME ARTICLE PRESENTED BY GREAT CLIPS

The Lincoln Stars wrapped up their regular-season series against the Omaha Lancers with a 5-3 win on Saturday night at the Ice Box.

Lincoln (35-19-3-1) won each of the final eight meetings against Omaha (16-32-5-4) and nine-of-10 overall in the 2022-23 season. Antonio Fernandez and Doug Grimes both scored twice in the third period to bring the Stars back from a 3-1 deficit after 40 minutes.

"It was just us sticking to the game plan and believing and what we do," head coach Rocky Russo said. "We told the guys after the game that when you believe in what you do and you stick with it, more than often you get rewarded. Tonight was another example of us believing in what we do and we got rewarded for it."

Fernandez scored twice 56 seconds apart just 1:20 into the third to move into a tie for third among USHL defensemen with 12 goals. Both came on the power play with the first on a five-on-three opportunity.

"That third period was huge for us," Fernandez said. "We weren't great on the power play (to that point) but we came out strong and made the best of it."?

Grimes gave the Stars their first lead of the night at the 12:49 of the third. He added an empty-net goal at 18:25 of the third for his second straight game with an empty-net goal and his second multi-goal game of the season to bring the crowd of 2,989 to its feet one more time in a dramatic third period.

"The crowd was unreal tonight," Grimes said. "We knew after scoring that second one in the third that there was no way we were losing with that crowd behind us.

Tanner Ludtke scored his 32nd of the season at the 9:23 mark of the first to move into a tie for the sixth-most goals in a single season in Stars history and to even up the game in the first period. He has four goals in his last three games after scoring twice last Saturday and once on Friday night at Omaha.

The Lancers scored a shorthanded goal when Hayden Kruse tallied his first in an Omaha uniform at the 3:14 mark of the first before Ludtke tied it up by getting alone in front of the net and Jared Mangan fed him from beneath the goal line to extend his point streak to nine games, the longest active streak in the USHL.

Omaha cashed in twice in the second period on goals by Ryan Kusler (4:13) and Drew Montgomery (13:15) to take a two-goal lead into the second intermission. Montgomery's was the third power play goal of the weekend for the Lancers after they had opened the season 0-for-30 in the first eight games of the season series against the Stars.

Lucas Massie stopped 18 shots to finish the season a perfect 4-0 against Omaha. He has won four of his last five starts overall.

The Stars have four games remaining in the regular season and remain in third place in the Western Conference and one point back of Waterloo for the second seed and a first-round bye. Lincoln travels to Fargo next weekend for two games against the Force before wrapping up the regular season with a home-and-home set against the Tri-City Storm on April 21-22.
