STARS SPLIT FIRST TWO PRESEASON GAMES

DEFEAT OMAHA, FALL TO SIOUX CITY

The Lincoln Stars defeated the Omaha Lancers, 3-1, on Friday before falling to the Sioux City Musketeers, 2-1, on Sunday in the Lancer Bowl at the Liberty First Credit Union Arena.

Goaltending backstopped the Stars on Friday night as Yan Shostak stopped 14-of-15 shots in the first two periods before Lucas Massie shut the door with a 10-save third period.

The Stars did all of their scoring damage in the second period, including striking twice in a 3:04 span. Keaton Peters recorded the lone assist on both goals, first setting up Jack Larrigan at the 2:04 mark and then German Yavash at 5:08 of the second. Peters cut toward the net from the near boards head on against goaltender Croix Kochendorfer before passing at the last moment to Larrigan to his right. Peters glided in from the right-wing boards again and found Yavash far-post side for the second goal.

The Lancers cut the deficit in half 40 seconds later on a two-on-one rush of their own in which a right-to-left pass was blocked but redirected into the Stars' net. Aidan Janz answered at the 15:47 mark on another odd-man rush off a feed from Patrick Raftery.

Lincoln's three-goal second period came in the only frame that it outshot Omaha (12-5). The Lancers outshot the Stars 10-5 in the first, 10-3 in the third and 25-20 overall.

Max Fercodic scored the Stars' lone goal on Sunday to bring Lincoln within a goal but that was as close as they would get. He cashed on a wrist shot from the far circle off a backhand pass from Reese Shaw in the slot at 5:19 of the third.

Santo Simmchen played the entire game in net on Sunday and stopped 28-of-30 shots.

The Stars wrap up the preseason with two home games next weekend. Omaha comes to town for a 7 p.m. game on Friday and then Sioux City visits on Saturday at 1. 7th Star members get in free to both games while single-game tickets are available for $10 on Friday and all fans get in free on Saturday.
