STARS DROP FIRST GAME OF FALL CLASSIC

MALTAIS SCORES TEAM'S FIRST GOAL OF THE SEASON

The Lincoln Stars fell to the Green Bay Gamblers, 4-1, in the first game of the regular season on Thursday afternoon at the Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry Township, Penn.

Matthew Maltais scored the Stars' lone goal by intercepting a pass that was banked off the near boards, skating in from the near wall and firing the shot top shelf to put the Stars on the board 19 minutes into the second period.

The Gamblers scored the game's first three goals, including two in the first period before adding an empty-net goal in the third period. Ben Poitras scored alone in between the two circles at the 4:21 mark of the first period to open the scoring. Libor Nemec redirected a shot on the power play with 11.8 seconds to double up the Gamblers' lead. Josh Player made it 3-0, Gamblers, 3:56 into the second before Blake Bechen added an empty-net goal at the 19:28 mark of the third.

Lincoln wraps up the DICK'S Sporting Goods USHL Fall Classic on Friday afternoon against the Chicago Steel, who defeated the Sioux City Musketeers in overtime on Thursday. The puck drops at 2:30 p.m. EDT.
