MEXICO SCORES TWICE, STARS BEAT BLACK HAWKS

STARS EARN FOURTH WIN IN LAST FIVE GAMES

The Lincoln Stars earned their fourth win in the last five games with a 5-3 win over the Waterloo Black Hawks on Saturday night at the Ice Box.

Justin Mexico recorded his first USHL multi-goal game with a go-ahead goal in the second and an insurance tally in the third. Max Ferkodic also recorded a multi-point night with the game-winning goal and an assist.

"I thought we played a much different game tonight," head coach Rocky Russo said. "We were more committed to being detailed. We were more committed to forcing them to have to go get the puck."

For the second night in a row both teams entered the first intermission tied up 2-2. Dashel Oliver opened the scoring with a wrist shot from the left-wing side 3:19 into the game for his third goal in the last five games. Blake Montgomery gave the Stars the lead once more just 53 seconds after the Black Hawks tied the game. His team-leading 12th goal of the season came after forcing a turnover himself at the far point and taking it the other way.

After Teddy Townsend struck at the 16:45 mark in the first to tie the game Mexico and Ferkodic went to work. Mexico whacked home a loose puck in the slot after Ethan Weber's shot was blocked in the slot. Ferkodic cashed in just under five minutes later when he wired home a shot from the left point to make it 4-2, Stars.

Mexico added to the lead with his second of the night at the 11:30 mark of the third thanks to an interception by Jared Mangan in the neutral zone. His wrist shot was denied but the bouncing puck rebounded to Mexico, who was able to settle it and fire it home.

"We were just going today from the start of the game, " Mexico said. "The momentum we carried throughout the whole game helped us capitalize on a lot of chances. Luckily I got two goals but the whole team played well today."

Lincoln (12-17-0-2) moved into a playoff spot with the win. They have another three-games in as many days stretch coming up on Thursday. The Stars are on the road at Tri-City before traveling to Omaha and then wrapping up the weekend at home on Saturday against the Storm.
