SHOSTAK SHUTS DOOR ON BLACK HAWKS

STARS WIN GAME 1

Yan Shostak stopped all 40 shots that he faced and the Lincoln Stars defeated the Waterloo Black Hawks, 1-0, in Game 1 of the first round of the Clark Cup Playoffs at Young Arena.

Jack Pechar redirected a shot between his legs from the right point by Ethan Weber at 8:05 of the second for the game's only goal to break the scoreless tie.

"Puck went high to Weber and I found myself in front," Pechar said. "He did a good job getting the shot through and I was lucky to get some wood on it. I didn't know it went in at first but then I saw the reactions from everybody."

Shostak recorded his first career shutout in his first career postseason game. He denied 14 shots in the first, 10 in the second and 16 in the third.

"Yan played fantastic tonight," head coach Rocky Russo said. "I'm proud of the guys for the effort of coming in here and winning Game 1 in a tough environment. I'm definitely proud of them but we haven't accomplished anything yet and we need to make sure we refocus and that we're ready to play because tomorrow's going to be even harder."

Lincoln was held without a power play for the first time this season but killed off both Waterloo power plays. Monday's win marked the Stars fourth win in their last five Game 1's of a playoff series.

The Stars look to advance to the second round as they face the Black Hawks again at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday.  Game 3, if necessary, is Wednesday night at the same time at Young Arena.
