Des Moines, IA. — The Lincoln Stars (3-3-0-0) earned a 1-0 shutout victory over the Des Moines Buccaneers (5-1-0-1), getting a second-period goal from Casey Vandertop (St. Thomas) and a perfect performance from goaltender William Prowse (Boston University) on Saturday.
After a scoreless opening period, Vandertop broke the deadlock at 6:44 of the second period, finishing a play set up by Evan Malkhassian (Harvard) and Jackson Rudh (St. Cloud State). The goal was the only scoring of the night as Lincoln held on for the one-goal victory.
The Stars controlled much of the play offensively, outshooting Des Moines 32-12, including an 18-3 advantage in the second period. Des Moines' goaltender kept the Buccaneers within striking distance, stopping 31 of Lincoln's 32 shots.
At the other end, Prowse was perfect, stopping all 12 shots he faced to record the shutout and earn the win. With his performance, Prowse earned his second consecutive shutout. Lincoln also killed off all four of Des Moines' power-play opportunities, helping preserve the narrow lead.
Vandertop's second goal of the season proved to be the difference as the Stars secured the 1-0 win behind a strong defensive effort and a standout performance from Prowse.
The Stars return to action on Monday in Sioux Falls against the Stampede. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
